Tam Thanh Cave Pagoda – “Unveiling the Sacredness in the Heart of the Earth”
The Tam Thanh relic site is located within the complex of the Nhi-Tam Thanh Scenic Area, To Thi Mountain - Mac Dynasty Citadel, Tam Thanh Ward, Lang Son UNESCO Global Geopark, Lang Son province, Viet Nam. With its immense value and inherent natural beauty, the Tam Thanh relic site was classified as a National-level relic site in 1962.
Researchers explain that the name “Tam Thanh” refers to the fact that this place was originally a Taoist temple dedicated to the Three Thanhs: Ngoc Thanh, Thuong Thanh, and Thai Thanh.
According to ancient texts (“Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi”), Tam Thanh Pagoda was built and renovated during the Le Dynasty (17th century).
Tam Thanh Pagoda is situated within a limestone massif formed approximately 360–245 million years ago, representative of the ancient geological history of Lang Son in general, Lang Son UNESCO Global Geopark in particular. The pagoda's space reflects the intermingling of Buddhism, Taoism, Mother Goddess worship, and folk beliefs. On the cliff face of the temple, a valuable system of stone steles is preserved. A highlight is the statue of Amitabha Buddha, in the style of 17th-century (Le-Mac) period, carved directly the rock: The statue is 2.2m high and 65cm wide, carved in a standing posture within the shape of a Bodhi leaf, wearing a robe that drapes over the heels, with a slight smile on its lips. Below is the Amitabha altar.
Besides the Buddhist altars in the style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries Nguyen Dynasty, Tam Thanh Pagoda also includes: the altar, of Ngo Thi Sy, the altar of Mother Goddesses and Deities, the altar of Mountain Deities, and the Immortal Sage altar with its unique system of statues.
Therefore, Tam Thanh Pagoda is not only a cave but also a "living museum" of geology and culture. The Tam Thanh Pagoda festival is held annually on the 15th day of the first lunar month.
