The citadel was built by Mac Kinh Cung in the 16th century to resist the influence of the Le-Trinh dynasty, with high, sturdy, interconnected walls. Taking advantage of the rugged mountainous terrain, the citadel was built with its back against the mountain, surrounding a flat area of thousands of square meters. Thus, the Mac citadel protected and sheltered the people, witnessing a prosperous dynasty that lasted for nearly a century with 12 kings.
This is a rare and important feudal defense relic. Visiting the ancient Mac citadel in Lang Son, tourists will have the opportunity to see firsthand the unique architecture, constructed large stone blocks bonded together with lime and sand. A special feature of this structure is that the eastern wall was bonded with molasses and honey – perhaps a unique and ingenious innovation in history. In addition, you can admire the ingenious arrangement of the gates, entrances, and loopholes. Currently, after enduring the vicissitudes of history, only two sections of the ancient citadel remain, each 1 meter wide and 300 meters long. In 1962, the ancient citadel of the Mac Dynasty in Lang Son was classified as a national historical relic. here, one can observe the entire center of Lang Son.
